5 things to do when it rains in Exmouth

When it rains in Exmouth, there’s still plenty to do when you’re trying to stay nice and warm.

When you think of Exmouth in Western Australia, you probably think of outdoor adventure, stunning beaches, and incredible wildlife. But what happens on the rare occasion that the skies open and it rains?

While rainy days are few and far between up here at WA’s jaw-dropping Coral Coast, it’s always good to be prepared for when a bit of drizzle gets in the way of your plans.

When is the wet season in Exmouth?

While there is no true wet season in Exmouth, if you’re planning a visit between January and June, there is an 8% chance of rain on any given day

With that out of the way, let’s explore our top five things to do in Exmouth when it rains.

1. Visit the Ningaloo Aquarium & Discovery Centre

Located in the heart of Exmouth at the Ningaloo Centre, the Ningaloo Aquarium & Discovery Centre is an exciting, immersive, and educational experience for the whole family.

Whether it’s a live or interactive display, the Ningaloo Aquarium & Discovery Centre is a great way to learn something and get in touch with all of the aquatic nature in Exmouth without the need for a wetsuit.

2. Snorkel at Tourquoise Bay

If it’s raining, you can still get out in the water and enjoy some of the best snorkelling in the world. We’ll even let you in on a little secret: sea life doesn’t give a hoot if it rains.

For the photographers out there, the extra cloud cover can benefit your underwater photography by dampening particles in the ocean usually picked up by sunlight.

3. Grab some food and watch the storm roll in from the lighthouse

There’s something magical about watching a storm roll in up here. If you happen to be in Exmouth when it rains, you can’t do much better than grabbing a bite to eat from Bamboo or Whalebone and watching the storm roll in from the lighthouse.

4. Surf’s up at Dunes Beach

If the surf’s up, why not head to Dunes Beach and watch the surfers catch a few waves? It’s a great spot to relax with a coffee, and there’s even a cute wooden hut for a bit of shelter.

5. Wine and dine

There’s nothing better on a rainy day than a bit of comfort food.

In Exmouth, we have a massive selection of restaurants to choose from to satisfy your rainy-day cravings.

From delicious tapas and cocktails at Exhale, pizza and beer at Whalebone Brewing, to creamy pasta and a glass of red at Whalers or a hearty meal at Froth Craft Brewery— Exmouth is home to some of the world’s best restaurants and finest produce, sure to keep you busy (and full) on those rare rainy days.

Ensure you’ve checked out all our tour information online for the days without rain (pretty much all of them).
