Whale Shark Swimming: Why is May the Best Month

Whale shark swimming is one of those incredible experiences that everyone should do at least once in their life, but when is the best month to do it?

If you’ve wanted to explore Ningaloo Reef for a while now, but you’re unsure about when you should visit, why not consider May? It may (see what we did there) be the best month to visit and do some whale shark swimming!

Before heading up here, check out our top five things to do in Exmouth

Let’s dive into why May is the best month for whale shark swimming.

1. May is the peak season for whale shark swimming

When you book a whale shark swimming tour, what’s the number one thing you want to do? Swim with whale sharks, of course!

This might seem like an obvious answer. However, given that whale sharks are wild animals, we can’t always guarantee that they’ll be around and keen for a swim.

Because of this, the absolute best time to spot and swim with whale sharks, or any megafauna for that matter, is always during their peak season.

Our Swim with Whale Sharks tours run from mid-March through to the end of July, making May the best time to visit and increase your chances of swimming with as many of these magnificent sharks as possible.

Avoid holiday surcharges

They say the best things in life are free. However, anyone who says that has clearly designwisemedical.org never been whale shark swimming.

Because our tours are limited to a maximum of 10 guests, we’re the first to admit that our tours are a little bit more expensive than other tour operators at Ningaloo Reef, but our small tour size means a more personal experience, more time in the water, and more time to pick the brains of our incredible team.

If you’re looking to save a bit of money and enjoy some whale shark swimming on a lighter budget, May is the perfect time to visit, because the crowd from the April school holidays have left town and there are no more school holiday surcharges to worry about.

Magic May

Up here, the locals like to refer to May as ‘Magic May’. And there’s a good reason for it! In fact, there are a few reasons why May is such an excellent time to visit Ningaloo Reef.

However, perhaps the most appealing reason to visit in Magic May is the heat … or lack thereof.

OK, look, it’s still pretty warm up here in May, but the weather is certainly a bit cooler than March and April. So, if you’re not the biggest fan of absolutely scorching weather, May is a great time to book a whale shark swimming tour with us.
